A series of pieces titled "Key Monuments" flays copies of H. W. Janson's "Key Monuments of the History of Art: A Visual Survey," an early version of what most late 20th century liberal arts graduates encountered as the standard survey text in art history. In "Key Monuments #5" (2009), Dettmer used sheet glass to make an intricately cutaway copy of the book's illustrations into a sort of Joseph Cornell box, acknowledging and leapfrogging one of his artistic sources.
